Born in 1948 in Cologne, Mechtild Jansen has been Head of Department at the Hessische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (Hessian State Office for Political Education) in Wiesbaden from 1987 to 2013, responsible for Gender Mainstreaming, Women, Gender-specific Education and Migration.

Mechtild M. Jansen studied at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences / Social Pedagogy in Cologne from 1967 to 1970, followed by studies in educational science, sociology and psychology at the Universities of Frankfurt/Main and Hamburg from 1971 to 1974.

From 1973 to 1985 Mechtild M. Jansen was Consultant for Feminist Education and Gender Studies for the Catholic Student Parish Frankfurt/Main. From 1978 to 1985 she was founding director of an intercultural child care facility for young children of students. From 1985 to 1987 she headed the Catholic Education Institution.

Since 1980 she has been lecturing at a range of universities (e.g. the University of Marburg, since 2006 in Cologne at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences).

In honour of her commitment toward emancipation and equal-opportunities for women she was given the Tony-Sender-Award offered by the City of Frankfurt/Main in 2009, for her involvement in gender and education policy.

Mechtild M. Jansen is active on a range of committees, among these the board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Hessen, the general meeting and the coordinating board of the Friends of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Bund (federal level), she is member of the founding committee of the Stiftung - Archiv der deutschen Frauenbewegung (Foundation Archive of the German Women's Movement), and she is member of the advisory council of the journal Feministische Studien.

Among many other publications she co-edited together with Mechthild Rumpf and Ute Gerhard the volume "Facetten islamischer Welten" (Facets of Islamic Worlds, 2003), and, together with Ursula Apitzsch the volume "Migration, Biographie und Geschlechterverhältnisse" (Migration, Biography and Gender Relations). The volume "Gender Mainstreaming, Herausforderung für den Dialog der Geschlechter" (Gender Mainstreaming, a Challenge for Cross-Gender Dialogue) was edited jointly with Ulrike Prokop in 2006. In 2007 she co-edited with Elisabeth Rohr and Ulrike Wagner-Rau "Die halbierte Emanzipation? Fundamentalismus und Geschlecht" (Diminished Emancipation? Fundamentalism and Gender), while Helga Nagel was her co-editor on "Religion und Migration" (Religion and Migration).

Polis - Analyse, Meinungen und Debatten (=Polis - Analysis, Opinions and Debates), is a series of publications by the Hessian State Office for Political Education and can be obtained free of charge from the Landeszentrale.
